about the author
Hello. I’m Gordon Pender.
My work includes preparing business plans for SME, and investment reports for fund managers and governments.
I have raised more than $20 million in capital – both equity and debt – for 15 businesses, including start-ups – plus a few plans that did not deliver.
I have worked with many good, quiet Australian entrepreneurs and have an extensive network of business contacts.
My areas of expertise:
- Raising risk capital including equity, debt and government grants and loans
- Preparing comprehensive, professional Business Plans and Feasibility Studies
- Preparing ‘due diligence’ reports for fund managers and government authorities
- Financial modelling and general business management consulting assignments
I managed a portfolio of unlisted investments for Australian Ethical Investment Limited for a period, as contract investment manager, and have undertaken due diligence and investment appraisals for fund managers and government authorities.
My 24 years as an independent consultant is backed by 20 years’ prior practical experience in production, QA, marketing, finance and business management. I work with some clients over many years. More than half my work is now repeat business.
Achievements
Gordon Pender and Company has worked with some 95 clients on 130 assignments over 24 years to prepare practical business plans and to raise risk capital. The emerging Australian venture capital industry since the 1980s has not been kind to small enterprises seeking capital, particularly those in manufacturing and in regional Australia. I am proud of my success in assisting and raising capital for my clients in a difficult market, and providing professional advice to many larger organisations.
I have gained a wealth of experience from working with some of Australia’s best entrepreneurs on practical projects to create new enterprises and new employment. I have a good understanding of how small business works, and how it should work.

- A grant and an Austrade loan for Fletcher International’s wool processing plant
- Two capital raisings plus government funding for Cowra Export Packers Limited
- Innovative Agricultural Marketing Program loan for Glenmore Exports Pty Ltd
- Business Victoria establishment grant for Cedenco Australia
- loan finance for restructuring the trust which owns Namoi Rural Traders
- $0.4M equity, $0.4M loan and $0.2M grant for Huon Valley Mushrooms

Testimonials
"Helen and I engaged Gordon in 1989 to construct a Business Plan for an agricultural value add business. We were successful in raising funds for the project, largely due to the professional approach Gordon took to writing the Plan. I have continued to use Gordon's expertise over the succeeding 20 years because:
He applies rigorous criteria to the financial planning aspect. He is able to construct the Plan in a simple and concise way. He states the case without fear or favour.
His work is extremely well regarded by his peers"
“Gordon Pender did a business plan for me in 1992 for a new wool processing plant that adds value to our meat processing and fellmongering works in Dubbo. It was a pretty good plan and raised more than two million dollars for the project from two government programs.
The plan said the project would be sustainable and it was, and is. It is now the only wool scouring and combing business left in Australia.
The plan was detailed and clear, and good value for money at the time. I paid Gordon a bonus for his work, which is rare.”
“I have found one of my biggest challenges in running the business is to look beyond the day to day – to the big picture issues. Gordon brings great analytical skills to the job of keeping those big picture issues front and centre, and in doing so has been a great asset to me personally and to the business”
“We employed Gordon Pender to do a business plan for us, we had used him before for a smaller assignment. We were very happy with the plan he wrote to raise $20 million for a new abattoir project. He also got us the maximum g government grants.
Gordon, from the city, understood all the details of our business so well, though we know he hates abattoirs. His plan was accepted by our bankers and some wealthy people who wanted to back us, and by some professional investors he introduced.”
“Gordon, Our sincere appreciation of your efforts in producing a business plan for the acquisition of our new business. Your professionalism and attention to detail was very much appreciated, to the degree that the bank finance credit department complemented us on a thorough and comprehensive business plan. Something that we could not have produced without your expertise. Job well done.” [January 2011]
